Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men in the U.S. As with all cancers, prostate cancer does not discriminate — even those who are extremely fit can develop the disease. Here is a list of eight athletes and professional coaches who fought prostate cancer and won.

Ken Griffey Sr.

With a family history of prostate cancer that took the lives of four of his uncles, Cincinnati Reds star outfielder Ken Griffey Sr. knew he had to be vigilant with regular PSA screenings. Griffey was lucky because his prostate cancer was caught early. After surgery he was given a clean bill of health and now Griffey is an advocate for screening. He regularly speaks out, particularly to African-American men, to ensure they get the support they need.

Griffey, diagnosed in 2006 at the age of 55, is the father of Baseball Hall of Fame recipient Ken Griffey, Jr. Source Everyday Health.
